Professor Darcy du Toit

Darcy holds the degrees of BA and LLB from the University of Cape Town and completed a doctorate in law at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. He taught labour law at the University of the Western Cape from 1991 until 2011 and is currently an Emeritus Professor involved in researching various aspects of labour law.

He was admitted as an attorney in 1974 and, after spending the period from 1975 to 1990 abroad, has been involved in different areas of practice during the course of his academic career, including service as an assessor in the previous Labour Appeal Court and a senior arbitrator of the Motor Industry Bargaining Council.

He has also published extensively on labour law, both in South Africa and internationally, and was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Society for Labour and Social Security Law (ISLSSL) from 2002 to 2012 as well as a Vice-President of that organisation from 2009 to 2012. Since 2004 he has been a member of the Advisory Board of the European Labour Law Networkand has held various positions in the South African Society for Labour Law (SASLAW).

Currently he is a member of the organising committee for the XXI World Congress of the ISLSSLwhich is due to be held in Cape Town in September 2015.
